Agriculture: Domestic production covers 70% of food needs

 APS – December 26th, 2017.

ALGIERS- Algeria’s agricultural production covers 70% of food needs and the challenge now consists in targeting strategic fields to meet the needs for staple foods, reduce imports and revive exports, announced the Secretary General of at the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fishing, Belkacem Chadi.

“Algeria currently covers over 70% of its needs for food through domestic production. Surplus in production also enabled Algeria to be present on the international market of dates, olive oil, vegetable products, potatoes and fruits,” said Chadi at the panel on agriculture and food-processing held on the side-lines of the 26th Algerian Production Food.

According to the same official, the reforms launched by the ministry in the last two decades, as part of various five-year economic growth programmes, allowed the sector to achieve “very encouraging” results.

While presenting the report on the sector’s achievements between 2000 and 2016, Chadi stated that the production of cereals increased from 9.3 million quintals in 2000 to 34.3 million quintals in 2016, up by 268%.

The national production of cereals hiked from 4.86 million quintals to 19.3 million quintals (+298%) while soft wheat production increased from 2.7 million quintals to 5.02 million quintals, up by 83%.

As for tomato meant for processing, its production rose from 4.7 million quintals to 12.3 million quintals (+160%) while vegetable products upped from 33.08 million quintals to 1.1.03 million quintals.

Regarding potato, production increased from 12.07 million quintals to 47.8 million quintals between the two comparison periods while dates hiked from 3.6 million quintals to 10.2 million quintals, up by 182%.

The production of meat also upped from 2.5 million quintals to 5.3 million quintals (+ 114%) while white meats increased from 1.9 million quintals in 2000 to 5.1 million quintals in 2016.

As regards milk, 3.5 million litres were produced in 2016 against 1.5 million litres in 2000 (+127%).

Other products also hiked in terms of quantities, including eggs (+ 231%), oats (+ 783%), fodder (+ 987%), pulses (+ 241%), tobacco (+ 38%), onions (+ 383%) and viticulture (+180%).

Nevertheless, this production momentum must be strengthened through processing, storage and cold storage capacities, particularly for fruits and vegetables.

Besides, the value of agricultural production reached more than DZD 3,000 billion in 2016, i.e. nearly USD 30 billion, against DZD 359 billion (USD 5 billion) in 2000.

Agriculture currently contributes with 12 to the GDP against 8% in 2000, stated the same official.
